Out of Character is the story of a college student who turned
to murder to make his life more interesting. Inspired by the
Baton Rouge serial killer hysteria, this story was created by
Patrick Rills in 2002, and a five page proposal was illustrated
by Heath Tullier in 2003. ICON Studios is currently working to
redesign this concept and release it as a graphic novel next
year.
Guy Hapwood hates himself. He hates that he is a genius. He hates
his grim outlook on life. But most of all, he hates that he has no
control. He feels a little part of him is incomplete, a part which
cannot be filled by mundane coursework and increasingly monotonous
social interactions with his eccentric friends. Guy sees no purpose
in his life and consequently is always late for class, complains
about everything, and radiates a sometimes-contagious sense of
apathy. He provides us with his less than optimistic narration of
the world around him in order that we gain a feel for the
hopelessness of his life.
Guy would love nothing more than to do something entirely
unexpected, to step out of character for just one moment in order to
ease his overwhelming curiosity, to commit murder, transforming his
animosity into a new art-form, expressing his creativity through the
body and blood of an innocent. What follows will send Guy into a
downward spiral from which he will spend the rest of his life trying
to crawl out.
Out of Character is a story of finding your place, learning hard
lessons, and living with the consequences they bring.
