The Keepers of the Word are a team spirits who thwart the
attempts of renegade ghosts to escape their afterlife prison. It
is a story born from boredom while waiting in the airport
terminal when traveling back from Comic-Con in 2003. Heath
Tullier and Patrick Rills created a six page proposal to shop
around to comic book publishers.
Since the time man first became aware of his own existence, the fear
of death has instilled in us a desperate yearning to unearth the
afterlife. Yet, all our search has yielded is speculation upon
assumptions turned into religion and gimmicky psychics.
Unbeknownst to us are forces hidden in the backdrop of reality,
protecting the secrets of the beyond. They are the Keepers of the
Word, a fraternity of spirits as old as time; eternally charged to
silence fellow specters.
The realization of death and their fate is for some souls too
burdensome. This anguish causes an intense flood of emotion which
overwhelms the after-realm, allowing the soul a moment to escape.
During their short-lived freedom, these renegade spirits reach out
to the living and offer to them the very knowledge they have
fruitlessly attempted to uncover for eras. In exchange, all they ask
is the utterance of a single word, the magical word which has become
known as Verbum non Scripta. The word, when spoken by mortals, is
the key to the spirits’ freedom. The word the Keepers are sworn to
protect.
To carry out their mission, the Keepers must hunt down these
renegade spirits and neutralize them by disrupting their mental
vitality with telepathic distortion. If a spirit has become too
powerful, they must use the abilities bestowed upon them to further
manipulate the paranormal energy at the foundation of the defecting
spirit’s soul. This often proves to be quite risky since the more
energy they exert; the more they blur the lines which separate the
living and the beyond. Using their powers too forcefully can cause
the Keepers to be seen by ordinary humans. Yet, sometimes the
gravity of the situation leaves them with no other choice.
The Keepers are an unsavory group of characters meticulously
hand-picked by their ever-elusive master. Their genuine disdain for
one another is displayed by their constant quarreling over protocol
and numerous verbal assaults aimed at one another. The members
arrived to their duty from all walks of life and from several time
periods. They include a cold-hearted Nazi soldier who died in World
War II, a jive-talking disco dancer who died in 1979, a gold-digging
debutante who died in 1956, and a tough-as-nails gang leader who
died sometime in the late 19th century. While overcoming generation
gaps, cultural differences, and the occasional hate speech, the
Keepers still manage to successfully execute their eternal purpose.
The primary focus of this miniseries will be the newest addition
to the Keepers, the recently deceased Garrett Miller. Through him
the story is told, and from him we receive the answers to all the
important (and sometimes not-so-important) questions we anticipate
the readers will want asked. As Garrett learns the intricate
inter-workings of this new world, so will the readers.
The relentless inquiries by Garrett will not only aide his
instruction, but more importantly will reveal the shroud of secrecy
that blinds the Keepers from the truth of their mission. A
conspiracy surrounding the sudden resignation of the oldest and most
respected member of the Keepers will be uncovered, revealing their
true purpose: to preserve the reign of Lucifer himself.
This information comes as an earth-shattering surprise to the
Keepers, who until then were unaware of his, and consequently God’s
existence. Forever distant from their master, the Keepers never
realized the origins behind the “magic” of Verbum non Scripta. Their
quest will be revealed to them as the implausible, biblical
definition of hell: total separation from God. A sudden deep
emptiness overwhelms them as their comrades’ yearning for freedom
becomes instantly justifiable. They will learn that the only freedom
the word provides is freedom from existence. The only escape from
Hell is for it to cease existing.
And Verbum non Scripta will be revealed for what is truly is: The
Name of God.
